Florence is ably served by an international airport, named after explorer Amerigo Vespucci, which serves a variety of destinations across Europe. From the UK flights to Florence are from Birmingham and London City and Gatwick airports, while European visitors can fly to and from Zurich, Geneva, Brussels and a variety of other cities. The airport is well-served by public transport, but renting a car from Florence Airport gives you more flexibility in planning your holiday in the Tuscany region.
The airport has a history that goes back to the early days of flight, and developed rapidly during the 20th century. Handling almost 2million passengers each year and seeing over 30,000 aircraft movements, it is a relatively busy airport although is eclipsed in size by the bigger Tuscany airport close to Pisa.
Convenient for Florence and many other destinations in Tuscany, the airport is the perfect place to pick up your rental car after booking online with our easy to use and secure system.
The airport is conveniently situated four kilometres from the centre of the city itself, and is reached by road using the A11 and E76 roads. For reference, rivers should follow the signs to the ‘Aeroporto’. Be careful to place your vehicle in the correct lanes, as the eventual approach to the airport is a one-way system that can catch unwary drivers out. However, it is clearly signposted from Florence.

Home to some of the greatest wonders of the art world, including works by Michelangelo, Da Vinci and other famous renaissance artists, Florence is known as much for its museums and galleries as it is for fabulous architecture. The glorious piazzas offer a choice of fine restaurants, comfortable cafes and quaint shops, while the quieter parts of the city are a delight to explore. The River Arno splits the city, and no visit to the city is complete without crossing the legendary Ponte Vecchio.
The region around Florence is one of the most delightful in Tuscany, and having a hire car means you have the best chance to explore some of the impressive nearby towns. San Gimignano is a typical walled town a little over 50km from Florence and is certainly worth a visit for its quaint architecture and friendly restaurants and cafes, while the town of Cortona is a wonderfully evocative hill town and can be easily reached by car from Florence. Wherever you decide to go you will find that the local people are welcoming, the food is glorious, and the wine some of the best anywhere in the world.
Florence, and Tuscany in general, is a place steeped in history, and as such is a cultural delight that will certainly be enjoyed. When in Florence, do not fail to visit the Uffizi gallery, home to some of the most treasured artefacts in the art world, and as such, one of the world’s greatest museums.
